چکیده

We present results from the analysis of deep ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the spiral galaxy M81. The inferred total (0.5–2 keV band) luminosity of M81 is ∼ 3×10 ergs s, excluding the contribution from identified interlopers found within the D25 ellipse. The nucleus of the galaxy alone accounts for about 65% of this luminosity. The rest is due to 26 other X-ray sources (contributing ∼ 10%) and to apparently diffuse emission, which is seen across much of the galactic disk and is particularly bright in the bulge region around the nucleus. Spectral analysis further gives evidence for a soft component, which can be characterized by a two-temperature optically thin plasma with temperature at ∼ 0.15 keV and 0.60 keV and an absorption of the Galactic foreground only. These components, accounting for ∼ 13% of the X-ray emission from the region, apparently arise in a combination of hot gas and faint discrete sources. We find interesting spatial coincidences of luminous (10–10 ergs s) and variable X-ray sources with shock-heated optical nebulae. Three of them are previously classified as supernova remnant candidates. The other one is far off the main body of M81, but is apparently associated with a dense HI concentration produced most likely by the tidal interactions of the galaxy with its companions. These associations suggest that such optical nebulae may be powered by outflows from luminous X-ray binaries, which are comparable to, or more luminous than, Galactic ‘microquasars’. Chemical enrichment of the complex hot ISM of the Antennae Galaxies: I. Spatial and spectral analysis of the diffuse X-ray emission

We present an analysis of the properties of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in the merging pair of galaxies known as The Antennae (NGC 4038/39), performed using the deep, coadded ∼411 ks Chandra ACIS-S data set. These deep X-ray observations and Chandra’s high angular resolution allow us to investigate the properties of the hot ISM with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution. Through a...

Low Mass X-ray Binaries as the Source of the Very Soft X-ray Emission in the X-ray Faintest Early-type Galaxies

The X-ray emission from the faintest X-ray elliptical and S0 galaxies is characterized by a hard ∼5 keV component, and a very soft ∼0.2 keV component. The hard component has generally been regarded as the integrated emission from low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), but the origin of the soft component is unknown. We present evidence which suggests that LMXBs also exhibit a soft component, which is...

Luminous Supersoft X-ray Sources in External Galaxies

We use a set of conservative criteria to identify luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) in external galaxies. We test this approach on blackbody models, and then apply it to Chandra data from 4 galaxies: an elliptical (NGC 4967), 2 face-on spirals (M101 and M83), and an interacting galaxy (M51). We find SSSs in every galaxy, and estimate that the total SSS population of sources with L > 10 er...

Chandra Observation of the Central Galaxies in A1060 Cluster of Galaxies

Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We found the spatial extent of the ISM component was much smaller than that of stars for both ga...

Newton OBSERVATIONS OF THE SPIRAL GALAXY M 74 ( NGC

The face-on spiral galaxy M 74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM-Newton on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5 from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope −0.8. This can be inte...
